the club.
an independent golf publication about the game as it’s played and as it’s remembered: the conditions it’s played in, the craft behind it, and the places it happens.
he was here before the course.
abattoir is a beautiful word with a dark meaning, set against the gentlest of pastimes. the club keeps it that way: nine parts beautiful, one part shadow. the darkness is felt, never announced.
there is no clubhouse, no membership fee and no dress code. readers are members. the newsletter is the notices. the rook keeps watch, in all weathers.
What the club believes
working beliefsgood design is mostly invisible; our job is to make it visible.
the ordinary deserves the same care as the iconic.
things should be made well and kept a long time.
golf belongs to its places.
conditions are remembered longer than scores.
Four themes
nostalgia runs through all four, as a moodconditions
weather, light, ground, season and the hour of the day, and how they shape a round.
craft
how things are made and worn: courses, clubhouses, wool, leather, waxed cotton, patina.
place
courses and the towns, landscapes and atmospheres around them. no fixed home geography.
observation
close noticing. the details most people walk past.
How pieces are told

a letter from the club every other week: what we’ve walked, what has worn out, and what is gone. members hear about the hats first.
